SPARK Animation '10
Celebrating Inspiration & Innovation
We're just one more sleep away from the start of this year's celebration of Animation, SPARK Animation '10. Excitement has been brewing for weeks and we're looking forward to opening night, where we've lined up an evening of premieres and an in-depth chat with documentary filmmaker, Ted Thomas.
Ted's father, legendary Disney animator Frank Thomas, was one of Disney's celebrated Nine Old Men. Ted also directed "Frank and Ollie" documenting the extraordinary friendship of his father and his best friend Ollie Johnston, which screened at last year's SPARK. We're very excited to welcome him to Vancouver this year as he introduces his latest film, "Walt & El Grupo." Chronicling the amazing ten-week trip that Walt Disney and a hand-picked group of artists and filmmaking talent (later known as "El Grupo") took to South America during WWII, the film documents a time Walt Disney described as the "toughest period in his life." Shot on film in five countries, the film time travels in Disney's footsteps through the use of personal letters and stunning artwork from the trip, remembrances by descendants and survivors, and extraordinary never-before-seen footage. SPARK Animation '10 is proud to present the Canadian premiere of this compelling film.

Following Ted's presentation and screening, we'll be presenting the Vancouver premiere of Don Hahn's behind-the-scenes glimpse at the re-birth of Disney animation, "Waking Sleeping Beauty." Documenting the history of Walt Disney Feature Animation from the making of The Fox and the Hound in 1980, to the release of The Lion King in 1994, the film covers the rise and fall of Disney's animation division, the effects the new corporate team of Michael Eisner, Frank G. Wells, and Jeffrey Katzenberg ,and the newfound success the studio had with the releases of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King between 1989 and 1994.

Opening night is not to be missed! We'll be opening the doors at 6:00 with a mixer, so please join us as we kick off another SPARK Animation Conference and Festival.
We look forward to seeing you there!
