Vancouver Digital Media Recruiting Fair
Wednesday April 20, 2005 — 4:00 PM

This past month ACM SIGGRAPH Vancouver, New Media BC, and the IGDA all came together to host the first annual Vancouver Digital Media Recruiting fair. The event, the first of its kind in Vancouver, provided the computer graphics community with a forum for corporate exposure, recruiting, and a first-hand look at Vancouver's abundant talent pool.

Overall the event was a huge success, with over 500 job seekers in attendance along with 15 companies whose presence is indicative of the current local hiring boom. It provided mutual gain for both prospective employees and employers by enabling face-to-face introductions. Employers were able to evaluate job candidates on the spot, getting a feel for personal attributes and soft skills, while simultaneously evaluating their technical and artistic merit. Likewise job seekers were able to submit resumes and sample works, getting instant feedback on their abilities, as well gaining insight into the inner workings of each company.

Representatives from several companies offered the following comments:
We've hired a couple folk since then. Look forward to next year!
It was one of the most smoothly run recruiting events I have attended.
We were quite pleased with the exposure we got from the event.

Companies reported taking in an estimated total of 610+ applications.

On the whole the event was thoroughly enjoyable. Not only were people getting valuable information, everyone was smiling, and having a good time. The event ran smoothly and will serve as a solid foundation for expansion in years to come.
