Trials & Tribulations of Indie Game Development

Join Union Entertainment and local indie game developers, Veggie Games and Gekido Design Group, as they share their experience of how their ideas were made into successful products. This presentation will cover a wide range of topics, including: evaluating your game idea, starting the business, financing, getting the right people, in-house development vs. middleware, working with limited art resources, branding, marketing, and much more.

MIKE WUETHERICK, CEO, Gekido Design Group Inc.
Mike is the Founder of the Gekido Design Group. With over 20 years of game programming and 10 years of experience in Internet-based development, Mike has been involved in everything from E-Commerce and Affiliate system, Content Management, Customer Relationship and Content Delivery systems for Video, Audio and XML-based data networks. For the past 4 years, Mike has been Project Lead for the Reality Factory Game Creation Suite (www.realityfactory.ca). Mike is responsible for the high-level organization & management of the project, including coordinating the international team of open-source programmers.
JOHNATHAN SKINNER, President, Veggie Games Inc.
Johnathan has been an animal-rights activist for many years, speaking up for the animals that can't speak for themselves. While brainstorming ways to increase the effectiveness of traditional advocacy, Johnathan was inspired to use his skill of making video games as a form of activism. As a professional video game developer since 1996, Johnathan took what he knew of game design, started his own independent company, Veggie Games Inc., and created the game Steer Madness.
ROB EDGAR, Business Development Manager, Union Entertainment
Rob's experience as an entrepreneur, and more recently a Business Development Manager with Union Entertainment (www.unionent.com) of Santa Monica, is focused on bridging the gap between traditional film/television and interactive entertainment. Over the past decade, Rob has been developing and marketing interactive content for the video game and feature film industries through which he has acquired an extensive background in business affairs, online marketing, production management and finance. From his base in Vancouver, Rob deals extensively with project and networks in the entertainment business in Vancouver, Hollywood and Silicon Valley. With a history of working on over 200 projects, he is a trusted vendor/partner to many of the major video game publishers and movie studios such as Vivendi Universal Games, Activision, Konami of America, Sony, Atari, Electronic Arts, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox, to name a few.
