Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH presents
Teasing the Senses: The Visual Style of Ratatouille
Presented by Sharon Calahan
June 25, 2008
Ratatouille - a film so deliciously beautiful that you could just eat it - even though it was crawling with vermin. Sharon Calahan was the director of photography and lighting on Ratatouille, and she will be taking us on a tour of the development of the visual style of the film. Pixar's goal was to distill the essence of presentation - the art of making food look appealing - and to spread that essence across the rest of the film, making the entire world appear rich and juicy. Come and share in an inside look at how visuals are developed at one of the most influential and successful animation studios in the world today. After her presentation, Sharon will introduce a screening of Ratatouille, so bring your appetite, and come and join Remy and his enormous family. It's going to be a tasty evening!
Ratatouille (USA 2007)
Directors: Brad Bird & Jan Pinkava // 111 min. // 35mm
Free Admission to all session attendees
In the animated-adventure, Ratatouille, a rat named Remy dreams of
becoming a great French chef despite his family's wishes and the
obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic
profession. When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds
himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his
culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being
an unlikely - and certainly unwanted - visitor in the kitchen of a
fine French restaurant, Remy's passion for cooking soon sets into
motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the culinary world
of Paris upside down.
Remy finds himself torn between his calling and passion in life or
returning forever to his previous existence as a rat. He learns the
truth about friendship, family and having no choice but to be who he
really is, a rat who wants to be a chef.
On-line sales are now closed.
