PANEL

Tuesday - October 21, 7:00 PM
The Nuts and Bolts of Iron Man
with Michael Blackbourn, Winston Helgason, Stephen Pepper & Noah Vice

The legendary Stan Lee created Iron Man in 1963. Forty-five years later Iron Man has been recreated fabulously by Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr., and a host of visual artists. Please join us along with three of these talented souls, Jonathan Harman (The Orphanage), Winston Helgason (The Embassy), and Michael Blackbourn (The Embassy) as they take us for a look under the hood at the nuts and bolts of Iron Man. It should be an inspiring and informative night full of clips from the film, shot breakdowns and behind the scenes stories. Sadly, Ms. Paltrow and Mr. Downey will not be in attendance, but plenty of your peers from around Vancouver will be there to chat with before and after the show. Doors open at 6:00 pm for a mixer and the show begins at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 for Vancouver Chapter members and $20 for the general public. Groups of 5 or more can buy tickets (on-line only) at the discount rate of $15 per person. We will be screening Iron Man at 9:30 pm, following the panel. The screening will be free for all panel attendees. We expect that not all the attendees will want to stay for the film as it is quite late, and so all Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter and VIFC members who cannot attend the talk are invited to attend the film for free. Film tickets for non-attendees will only be available at the door on a first come first serve basis. Tickets will be handed out starting at 9:15 pm.

Iron Man (2008)

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is not a force for good in the world. He's a womanizing, rich, man-child, engineering genius with billions of dollars of toys paid for through the profits of high tech weapons sales. Taken prisoner on a sales trip to the Middle East, Stark is awakened to the realities of his industry of which he has somehow been blissfully ignorant. Not everyone is happy about his transformation however and so both Iron Man and his nemesis, Iron Monger, are born. Both Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow turn in much more nuanced performances than we are used to in summer action fair, elevating this film above it's peers in what some are calling the "summer of the super hero". The Orphanage, The Embassy and Industrial Light and Magic have combined their talents to create the visuals for the film, and they are so good that they often completely disappear into the story. Come join us for a screening of the film introduced by the effects makers themselves.

SPEAKERS BIOS

Michael Blackbourn
VFX Artist / The Embassy
(Iron Man, Terminus, Andromeda...)

After four years as a US Army airborne infantryman, Michael changed his career path to something that better leveraged his artistic abilities. Michael's career in visual effects started in 2001 when he completed the animation masters program at CDIS in Burnaby. He went on to work as an animator and TD at various local companies completing video projects and short films. In 2002 he took advantage of a great opportunity to broaden his skills by joining a small team to create a locally developed PS2 game. He then got into the TV effects industry by joining the in house team for Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. He led the 3D team there during its final season. After Andromeda, he worked at Spin on commercials and TV and then worked as an independent freelancer. In 2005, as a freelancer he contacted The Embassy for work and ended up joining their team as a contractor and later became an employee. Michael helped The Embassy successfully complete a variety of projects during his 3 years there, animating and rendering everything from cars, robots, viruses and ice cream, to eventually leading The Embassy's 3d team for the Mark1 suit in Marvel's Iron Man. He's currently working on The Embassy's next film project, District 9 by Neill Blomkamp.
