LAIKA's Research & Development Department are pioneering many new tools and initiatives, making major contributions to the studio's film and commercial productions including:
- Creating tools and pipeline for Stereoscopic Production (Coraline is the first Stop-Motion Animated Feature to be shot in Stereo);
- Developing new tools to assist in the integration of Computer and Stop-Motion Animation;
- Building from the ground up several types of production pipelines;
- Creating new and new types of tools to assist and aid Computer Animation Production.

LAIKA/entertainment is currently in production on Neil Gaiman's "Coraline", written for the screen and directed by Henry Selick ("The Nightmare Before Christmas", "James and The Giant Peach"); and is in pre-production on "Jack & Ben". The company recently purchased the rights to one of the U.K.'s current best-selling children's novels, writer/illustrator Alan Snow's "Here Be Monsters".
